📐 Technical Information

Suggested yarn: DK to fingering weight
Notions: Circular needles appropriate for your yarn
Markers: Not needed for this project

📐 Shawl Shape: Semi-Circular or Crescent

This pattern lets you choose between a semi-circular or crescent shawl.
The only difference is in the number of repeated rows in each Brioche Section – just follow the instructions for your chosen version.

🧵 Sample Shawl

  • Yarn: Martin’s Lab BFL Sock in two colors: Dragonfish (MC) and Pumpkin Pie (CC)

  • Yardage:
      – MC (Dragonfish): 1 skein – 400 m / 437 yards
      – CC (Pumpkin Pie): approx. 0.88 skein – 351 m / 384 yards

  • Finished dimensions:
      – Wingspan: 140 cm / 55″
      – Depth: 58.5 cm / 23″

    • Gauge: 14 sts & 33 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4″ in brioche rib stitch

Gauge is not critical, but it will affect the finished size and yarn usage.

🎨 Colour Options

This pattern is written for two colors, but you can use as many as you like. Here are some creative suggestions:

  • Use a different CC for each Brioche Section. Since the CC is cut at the end of each section, it won’t create extra ends to weave in.

  • Use one MC for the setup rows and Increase Sections, and change both MC and CC for each Brioche Section.

  • Use your imagination – the more colors, the more fun!

⏳ When to Finish

You can bind off whenever you’re happy with the size or running low on yarn – every point is a good one!
Just remember: the look of the edge depends on where you choose to stop.

  • For a smooth, clean edge, finish after a full Brioche Section.

  • For a soft, decorative ruffle, finish after an Increase Section or partway through a Brioche Section – ideal for a more romantic look.

Both options work beautifully – it’s entirely up to you.

👋 Hey there – a few words about me!

My name is Elżbieta Torenc, and I’ve been knitting since childhood – with a few breaks along the way – but since 2011 I’ve been designing professional knitting patterns, specializing in two-color brioche, my favorite technique of all.

My mission is to create clear, supportive instructions that make learning to knit – especially brioche – feel simple, intuitive, and enjoyable.

Color play has always been a big part of my knitting journey, whether in brioche or stranded colorwork. Changing just one color – or adding a new one – can completely transform the final result. You can see this clearly in colorwork charts: a small shift in shade can make your eyes see something entirely new and unique.

In my patterns, I guide you step by step so you’ll never feel lost or stuck wondering, “What now?” With clear explanations and structure, you’ll move through the project with confidence and joy – and create something beautiful and refined.

And a little proud moment: in 2017, my brioche shawl design Fields of Sunrise was published in Knit Now, Issue 80!
